Man overboard (MOB) is one of the most time-critical emergencies on a boat. The first 60 seconds determine whether you recover a conscious person or a drowning victim. Here is the immediate action sequence and how d3kOS supports the response.
Immediate actions — first 10 seconds. Shout “Man overboard” to alert the crew. Throw a horseshoe buoy, dan buoy, or any floating object toward the person immediately. Assign one crew member to keep eyes on the person at all times — never look away. A person in the water becomes invisible within seconds in any chop.
Press MOB on your chartplotter or GPS immediately. This marks the position. Do not try to memorise the position or write it down — press the button. Every chartplotter and most handheld GPS units have a dedicated MOB function, usually a prominent button or soft key. The GPS marks the position and many units automatically calculate the return bearing.
d3kOS MOB marking. Saying “Skipper Don, man overboard” to d3kOS marks the current GPS position in the log with a timestamp. The dashboard displays the marked position and bearing back to it from your current position.
The Williamson turn. For a single-handed vessel or when the person is no longer visible: put the helm hard over to the same side the person went over, turn 60 degrees, then reverse helm full and turn until you are on a reciprocal course back through your wake. This brings you back along your original track, which is where the person in the water will be.
After recovery. Any person recovered from cold water requires immediate treatment for hypothermia even if they feel fine. Lay them flat, remove wet clothing, apply insulation, and call for medical assistance.
