Buying From the Checklist: How a Breakdown Changed My Shopping Habits

After my breakdown on Erie, I knew one thing for sure: I wasn’t going to be caught unprepared again. The first casualty was the cigarette lighter, so I replaced it with a proper 12‑volt marine plug. That got me thinking—why did I have different style fuses scattered around the boat, and not a single spare on hand? Time to make a checklist and start ordering.

Normally, I’d head to my local marina to see what they had. But with a 30‑year‑old boat, generic parts aren’t always on the shelf, and I wasn’t about to pay OEM prices. So I went online.

  • Amazon had everything I needed: a new fuse box to prevent future meltdowns, fuses, marine wire, sleeves, and more. Overnight delivery sealed the deal.
  • Walmart surprised me with competitive pricing on similar items. Who knew they even carried marine gear?
  • AliExpress had the lowest prices of all, but with a 2–6 week wait, timing wasn’t on my side.
  • Costco didn’t have the parts I needed, but I did find dog life-jackets and plenty of accessories for food, camping, and picnics.

In the end, Amazon won on speed, and I was back at the boat the next day installing parts and checking items off the list. Lesson learned: when it comes to marine gear, you can save money by shopping around, but if you need it now, online delivery beats waiting weeks.

I still like walking into a store and seeing what I’m buying, but for marine supplies—especially when you’re trying to prevent another breakdown—online is the way to go.
